Emotional
Support Classroom
Eligibility:
- Students identified by School District of Philadelphia as those
that require an emotional support-learning environment.
- Most of these students will have an Axis I mental health diagnosis
and a wide range of academic and social needs that may include
the following:
• Returning from psychiatric hospitalization or Partial
Hospitalization Programs
• Experiencing social/emotional difficulties that influence
school performance
• Experiencing or having suffered from a traumatic event
• At risk or in crisis
Goals:
- To ensure that therapeutic learning occurs in a context of well-planned
and meaningful days where one successful accomplishment leads
to another;
- To improve cross – system collaboration, reduce fragmentation
in services and ensure that continuity of care exist for children
with behavioral issues; and
- To help parents and/or caretakers acquire the skills necessary
to care for children with emotional and behavioral health needs.
Services:
- Enrollment is open throughout the school year with immediate
responses to the School District of Philadelphia’s needs.
- Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that include a Functional
Behavioral Assessment (FBA).
- Immediate access throughout the entire school year to needed
services
- Close liaison with parents, teachers and the entire children
and youth services (Mental Health, Child Welfare, Probation and
Juvenile Justice)
- Student, Parent and Family Counseling
- Priority access to Community Council’s continuum of care
- Self-contained on site location with close supervision throughout
the entire school year
